Definition of OEE

OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) is one of the most important metrics used in lean management. Manufacturing companies focus their attention on OEE as a generally acknowledged measure of and reference for productivity. Originally developed by the Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance, this metric is used to assess technical and organizational aspects of manufacturing plants.

Companies can take advantage of OEE to get an objective handle on their current productivity, systematically spot opportunities to make improvements, make sounder decisions, and ensure sustained progress in improving their economic situation.

OEE Factors

OEE is the ratio of fully productive time to planned production time. It’s calculated from three factors: availability, performance, and quality.

AVAILABILITY

A machine’s availability is a measure of the losses caused by a machine’s unplanned stops.

A machine’s performance is a measure of the losses caused by reduced yields, expressed as pieces per unit of time.
