Define output and reporting period
Choose one machine or a comparable group of machines. Count parts completed in a fixed day, week or month. Different products need a common output unit that represents the production mix.
Two separate arithmetic scenarios. Reducing the denominator raises utilization without increasing production. The target output is an arithmetic result and may contain fractional parts.
First check that shift patterns, product mix and quality definitions match in numerator and denominator. A result above 100% means actual output exceeded entered capacity. Review the capacity assumption before committing additional orders.

Use sustainable output under the chosen shift pattern. Document which normal downtime is already included. A short production peak uses a different reference level.
Unused capacity is the positive difference between capacity and output. Output above capacity is shown separately. Your utilization target is a planning assumption; the calculator does not recommend a universal utilization rate.
Actual output ÷ capacity × 100The same period and counting basis for both quantities.
max(capacity − actual output, 0)Unused capacity is zero when output exceeds the entered capacity.
Target output = capacity × target percent ÷ 100Gap = target output minus actual output. A negative gap means the target has already been exceeded.
Illustrative manufacturing week: 8,000 parts completed and sustainable capacity of 10,000 parts. The example uses an 85% planning target.
| Item | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Utilization | 8,000 ÷ 10,000 × 100 | 80% |
| Unused capacity | 10,000 − 8,000 | 2,000 parts |
| Target output | 10,000 × 85 ÷ 100 | 8,500 parts |
| Gap to target | 8,500 − 8,000 | 500 parts |
Enter planned output to calculate planned utilization, or completed output for actual utilization. Label the resulting reports accordingly.
Actual output exceeds the entered capacity. Check period length, shifts, product mix and capacity definition. The calculator preserves the result.
A useful target depends on variation, delivery commitments and reserve requirements. The prefilled target is an example rather than an industry recommendation.
